Growing our Knowledge

1 in 2 students* have reported experiencing sexual harassment or violence in an experiential learning opportunity.

In STEM, women and gender-diverse learners face a disproportionate risk of sexual violence and harassment in experiential learning opportunities (co-ops, internships, labs, etc.). However, without STEM-specific national data, it is difficult to understand the scope of the issue, identify where support is most needed, and develop effective prevention and response strategies.

To fill this gap, At The Root is launching a national survey to better understand the landscape of sexual harassment in STEM experiential learning. This research will fill a significant knowledge gap by providing national data to advance gender equity and support systems change at the organizational, institutional, and policy levels.

The survey will be open September 1-30 and available in English and French.

Survey FAQ

    • The National Survey on Sexual Harassment in STEM Experiential Learning is led by the At The Root Project and is funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada.

    • The survey builds on foundational research on sexual harassment in experiential learning, workplace sexual harassment, and gender-based violence in post-secondary settings, including: the Sexual Harassment in Experiential Learning Project led by Possibility Seeds and licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0; the Respect at Work Project led by CREVAWC, researchers at the University of Toronto, and the Canadian Labour Congress; as well as the Survey on Sexual Misconduct at Work and the Survey on Individual Safety in the Postsecondary Student Population by Statistics Canada.  

    • The National Survey on Sexual Harassment in STEM Experiential Learning will fill data gaps about sexual harassment in STEM experiential learning. 

    • Data from the survey will help to generate a baseline understanding of: (1) the nature, prevalence and impact of sexual harassment in STEM experiential learning contexts across Canadian post-secondary students; (2) available resources, supports, and reporting options; and (3) barriers to accessing available resources, supports, and reporting options. 

  • The survey is open to participants across Canada, including current students and recent graduates, post-secondary staff and faculty, and employers and experiential learning providers. If you have participated in, or supported, experiential learning opportunities for STEM students, we want to hear from you!
