At the Root Project Launches National Survey on Sexual Harassment in STEM Experiential Learning
Take a moment to imagine this scenario.
You’re a third-year undergraduate student, and you’ve recently been accepted into an internship at a top engineering firm.
During training, your manager starts making comments on your physical appearance that make you uncomfortable. You’re not sure who to tell and are scared that if you speak up, you’ll lose the opportunity.
Suddenly, your dream internship has turned into something you dread.
This scenario is all too common for women and gender-diverse students in STEM experiential learning, and it’s time we talked about it.
The At the Root Project has launched the first national, bilingual survey on sexual harassment against post-secondary students in STEM experiential learning.
We are conducting this national survey to build a baseline understanding of the nature, prevalence, and impact of sexual harassment in STEM experiential learning contexts, and to identify available resources, supports, and reporting options.
This research will contribute to national data that can advance gender equity and support systems change at the organizational, institutional, and policy levels.
We want to hear from:
Students enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary institution in the last 48 months;
Current and former (within the last 48 months) post-secondary staff and faculty; and
Current and former (within the last 48 months) employers and experiential learning providers.
Plus, student participants are eligible to enter into a draw to win 1 of 2 $100 cash prizes!
The survey will ask about:
Your role, workplace, and/or experiential learning position;
Experiences and/or observations of sexual harassment in experiential learning;
And your thoughts on existing and future response and prevention efforts by post-secondary institutions, workplaces or experiential learning settings, and provincial, territorial, and federal governments.
The survey is anonymous and online and should take an estimated 20 to 40 minutes to complete.
The survey is open September 1-30, 2026.
